What kind of entertainment services do you offer to viewers in the United States?

In the United States, TV5MONDE USA operates 6 premium television services which include TV5MONDE USA, TV5MONDE Style, TV5MONDE Cinema On Demand, TV5MONDE INFO, TiVi5MONDE, and TV5MONDE Docs. Additionally, TV5MONDE Voyage is available for US hotel distribution in the “free to guest” television package.

TV5MONDE USA is part of the TV5MONDE global network headquartered in Paris. TV5MONDE’s partners include France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and the province of Québec.

We acquire a large quantity of our programs, including films, series, documentaries, lifestyle, news and sports, directly from leading and independent distributors. We position ourselves as a premium content offering, so our goal is to bring high quality content to our US viewers. We also produce up to six hours per day of news and current affairs shows from our Paris studio, as well as lifestyle programs, including Épicerie Fine, #Version Française, Rendez-vous D'Amérique, and more.

Streaming services have revolutionized how we watch TV and consume content. As COO of TV5Monde, you lead the company’s digital strategy. Can you tell us more about your strategy to remain competitive?

As we enter 2020, it’s clear that the growth of video streaming will continue to impact the media landscape. We’re definitely growing our streaming distribution through leading streaming platforms nationwide such as Sling TV, and we are working on new agreements for 2020. But we also continue to pay close attention to our “traditional” distribution on satellite, cable and telcos working with our partner distributors like NBC/ Comcast, Dish, Charter, Cox, Altice, Verizon, and AT&T to name a few. These companies continue to play a key role in the video distribution ecosystem and remember—they are the main providers of broadband access in the United States.

New streaming platforms have allowed us to expand our offering of networks and on demand services. We can offer additional value to our subscribers with more entertainment options and allow them to watch their favorite programs in the way they want. You can now access all our networks on any device, including Roku, Smart TVs, Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick. Our subscribers are very engaged, as they watch on average more than 2.5 hours per day of TV5MONDE content, this represents more than 60% of their video viewing time. More than half of our US subscribers are American Francophiles

Why is supporting the French-American community in the Bay Area important to you?

The Bay Area is very unique with a large French, Francophile and international community with a dynamic and cultural, innovative ecosystem. TV5MONDE is reaching business communities worldwide with the latest business news and programs highlighting the expansion and success of French companies around the globe. Every year we offer full coverage of the CES show in Las Vegas with a focus on French and Francophone innovation and startups.

COVID 19 situation question:

Due to the COVID-19 situation millions of Americans are locked down at home for more than a month now, what direct impacts did the shelter in place orders have on TV5 monde USA? (Customer habits, number of viewers in the United-States...)

Since mid-March the majority of TV5MONDE employees began working from home.  Our newscasts, as well as, regular program productions have been affected by the “stay at home” restrictions and obviously all live sport programming has been put on “pause.”  Fortunately we’ve been able to maintain the transmission of all our networks and on demand services, and our viewers are able to watch news coverage from all our partners, series, films, documentaries, and lifestyle programming.

In light of school closures around the globe, TV5MONDE Info is offering Nation Apprenante, two hours of classes for college and lycée students  every weekday produced by France 4 in cooperation with the Ministère de l'Education Nationale et de la Jeunesse

Since mid-March, our customer service lines have received twice as many requests as usual. We continue to see a great interest in the network, and our goal is to continue to bring the best news and entertainment to our US viewers for weeks to come and resume regular programs when possible.

The TV, streaming and digital video industry is already undergoing a seismic shift: How the coronavirus is going to accelerate that shift and reshape the future of TV?

Streaming behavior was already growing, but Data firm Conviva found that for the period of March 9 to March 23, overall hours spent streaming video in North America increased by 27% (reference: Multichannel News, April 6, 2020). With so many different contenders and content in the oversaturated steaming arena, its ultimately the consumers who will decide the fate of who stays/.

What positive impacts/new practices do you plan to implement now and/or in the future?

We are still learning from this unprecedented situation.  There is one thing that is certain, during this “stay at home” time, infrastructure plays a key role, whether it’s for video streaming, working, video conferencing or staying in contact with loved ones. Our plan is to consult with our US distributors when the situation improves to see how we can improve to best serve the needs of our US subscribers
